Through the Looking Glass [May. 18th, 2008|02:54 pm]
Opera Australia

More like Opera in Australia.

Hey everyone! Last night I saw the very first run of Through the Looking Glass by Alan John and Andrew Upton.

If you are in Melbourne in May you should go and see it!

Go Victorian Opera!

Arabella review [May. 2nd, 2008|04:39 pm]
Opera Australia

I saw Opera Australia's Arabella on Wednesnight, and loved it, so I thought I'd copy over the review I wrote for my personal journal, since I'm sure there will be people here interested to read it (and it took me forever to write) Normally I get a bit bored with operas that are so soprano-heavy (Are you listening, Mr W. A. M.?), but this was quite enthralling. I highly recommend it to anyone able to attend any of the remaining performances.

More on Arabella withinCollapse )

OMG. I went on Thursday night and it was ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC!

Hopefully OA'll do a recording/video of it!

Arabella [Mar. 15th, 2008|02:31 pm]
Opera Australia

It's on ABC Classic FM right now.

Peter Coleman-Wright and Cheryl Barker are so cute! They were just interviewed during the first interval.

I saw Arabella on Tuesday night and it was really great. IL Strauss. I'm glad to not-hear all the coughing that was going on.

la cenerentola [Jan. 14th, 2008|12:50 pm]
Opera Australia

There's a review of La Cenerentola in today's SMH.

Not particularly glowing but does say good things about Dominica Matthews :)

2007 in review [Jan. 3rd, 2008|08:49 pm]
Opera Australia

I thought that, to match the post looking forward at 2008, I'd post one where we can discuss the year gone by.

What did you see?
What did you enjoy?
What could have been better?

Myself, I didn't get to as much as I would have liked as I was ridiculously busy most of the year. I missed OA's autumn season entirely, though did see Pirates of Penzance with the help of a friend in the cast. I had better luck with the spring season, though, seeing Don Giovanni and Les Contes de Hoffmann (which I had to see again so, like a good little mezzo, I could study Dominica Matthews more thoroughly). I also enjoyed those of the set of three pre-opera recitals that OA's young artists program put on, especially since the young artists being featured were both mezzos. Although I prefer Dominica to Sian Pendry. There's something about her vocal production which makes me worry for her future.

And of course, was there anyone who didn't enjoy Teddy Tahu Rhodes' costuming (and lack thereof) as the Don? He definitely made Mozart worthwhile.

2008 SEASON [Aug. 23rd, 2007|03:34 pm]
Opera Australia

A few days late but that's just because I was late in 'getting bothered.'

If you get the Saturday paper you will have probably received the brochure already but there's no harm in a repost.

THE OPERASCollapse )

A little disappointing, the number of international artists given our PLETHORA of talent (including David Hobson)
